The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed States/UTs and Regional Directors to undertake special surveillance and enforcement drives during the upcoming Navratri and Diwali festive period to prevent adulteration, counterfeiting, and circulation of unsafe food products.
The following has been stated:
Enhanced inspections and sampling: Designated Officers, Food Safety Officers and Central Food Safety Officers have been directed to conduct inspections and sampling, particularly at identified hotspots and sensitive locations.
Key food products covered: The drive will focus on milk and milk products, sweets, snacks and savouries, namkeen, papad/fryums, edible oils, beverages, ghee and other food items having increased festive demand.
Region-specific focus: The commodities for surveillance may be decided based on local eating patterns and prevalence, such as kuttu atta and singhada atta in northern and western regions.
Food Safety on Wheels: Where available, Food Safety on Wheels (FSVW) units should be strategically deployed at prominent markets or based on intelligence inputs for on-the-spot testing, awareness and enhanced vigilance.
Real-time reporting: Details of inspections, sampling and their outcomes are required to be updated/recorded on FoSCoS/FoSCoRIS on a real-time basis.
